I'm tired of people pointing to Thinkpads and saying they are designed cheaply because the casing is not made of metal.

It's not about material alone, but HOW you construct the device using the material. If you use the worst possible construction where the frame is thinner than a toothpick, and have this be where all the pressure from hinge movement resides, then it's going to break, regardless of what you make it out of.
