Description

Homesteading has endured the less than glamourous reputation as a survivalist or basic subsistence lifestyle. In actual fact much of Canada's history was literally built by homesteaders. The Dominion Lands Act of 1872 gave the deed to 160 acres of land to each homesteader, who could build a home and grow a crop on a potion of the land in three years. These skills and work ethics slowly eroded over the years until Covid blew up global supply chains causing shortages of essential food items in various regions. The disruption in supply chains highlighted the dependence on international trade for food security and the fragility of global interconnectedness. Suddenly people were concerned about food availability, security, quality and safety. People became aware and frightened how exposed and unprepared they were for an uncertain future. Now homesteading and self sufficiency were back in demand. Welcome to our life. Welcome to The Mellon Patch, It’s a family thing.
