Description
Great Escape Farms is a small family farm located just outside Romney, WV, USA. We have been in business since 2015 and sell unique edible plants, operate a Permaculture/regenerative agriculture showcase farm, give farm tours and homestead classes, and produce educational videos on gardening and homesteading.
Plant Nursery
Our unique edible plants are propagated and grown on the farm with only a few exceptions.
Each plant either produces edible berries, fruits or is of itself entirely edible. When we say unique, we mean that our plants are generally items that you cannot find locally at that big box stores. Things like Elderberry, Pawpaw, Hardy Kiwi, Persimmon, Honeyberry, Hardy Fig, Turkish Rocket, Sea Kale, Anise Hyssop, Hazelnut, Hardy Passion Flower, and many other items.
We practice regenerative practices as much as possible. With the exception of extreme drought years, our nursery’s water needs are derived entirely from rainwater harvested from our outbuildings. As of 2023, we make our own potting soil on site using mostly inputs from the local area.
We sell our plants at local farmer’s markets and at the farm. We no longer ship plants due to shipping and regulation issues.
Educational Videos
Our first video was posted in 2015. The video was poor quality and the audio was horrible. We learned as we went along, improved equipment, content, and editing. We have come a long way since then. We now have over 550 videos posted, over 29 thousand subscribers, and over 6 million views.
Most of the videos are plant related and showing how to propagate plants, care for them, and showing garden tours through the years. We also have homesteading videos on how to make certain things, how to fix the many things that break around the homestead and even how to set up your own rainwater harvesting system. Check out the link below to see the channel.
Regenerative Agriculture Showcase
We average a farm tour a week throughout the year. Many of our visitors are from within 50 miles of our farm. We also have some that travel great distances. Most of the out of towners discover us through videos and have come from as far away as New York City, Chicago, and Dallas.
Some of the draws to the farm are the rainwater harvest systems, and permaculture / regenerative practices in place and planned. We teach people things like how to protect plants from deer and how to slow down water and hold it on the land after a fast-moving thunderstorm. Another big topic of interest is how to companion plant and design growing areas to maximize production while reducing external inputs and chemicals.
While many of our regenerative agriculture plans have been implemented, we still have a good bit of work to do. Our goal is ultimately to become a showcase for regenerative agriculture through the design science of permaculture.
