Post-Conditioning Pressing

It’s been almost 2 weeks since my last pressing session so I eased into it with light, high volume low-incline presses in the 10+ rep range.

Next, I used the Hoist “ROC -IT” Machine Press, probably my favorite non-Hammer Strength pressing machine. The way it shifts the pressing angle mid-stroke is like magic to my shoulders. I can either use the lack of shoulder strain to go heavier with less risk of injury or, what I did today, go higher volume and push right up to 0 RIR/concentric failure.

Last, after hitting failure on the machine presses I finished the job with “Louie’s.” Getting past even 10 pushups was a struggle at this point so the first set was already around 1-2 RIR, the second 1-0 and the last sets were to failure.

I don’t normally do a lot of failure training but it made sense today for a few reasons. Light pressing, even to failure just won’t generate nearly as much systemic fatigue as legs or back training will. Second, my work schedule has me lifting so infrequently the past few weeks I want to have absolute certainty that I derive a very robust stimulus the few opportunities I get to do so.

Under ideal circumstances, I’d prefer to do less more often but these manipulations of intensity, volume and frequency are how you keep training a sustainable, holistic part of your lifestyle and not an “extra thing” you begrudgingly do on occasion.
