"It's All In the Game," written by Charles Dawes and Carl Sigmar, was a double hit for Tommy Edwards; originally released in 1951, the song stalled at no. 18 on the Billboard chart. However, Edwards rerecorded the song in 1958 and this version shot to the no. 1 position on the Billboard Top 100 chart and remained on the chart for 22 weeks (Whitburn, 1986, 2013). "This is the only #1 hit ever written by a US Vice President. [The music] was composed in 1911 by then-banker Charles Gates Dawes, who became VP under Calvin Coolidge in 1925. The lyrics were added in 1951 by the Brill Building songwriter Carl Sigman. . . Unfortunately, the vice president never got to hear the lyric. On the day [Sigman] handed in the finished assignment [April 23, 1951] , Dawes died of a heart attack (songfacts, 2025; britannica, 2025). Other artists who charted on the Billboard chart with their versions of the song include: Cliff Richard (1964 no. 25) and The Four Tops (1970 no. 24) and on the Billboard Country chart Tom T. Hall (1977 no. 12), Jerry Jane (1975 no. 53) and Merle Haggard (1983 no. 54) (Whitubrn, 1994).
