In this video Swiss independent watchmaker Roman Winiger takes us on a tour of La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle in the Jura Arc, the cradle of Swiss watchmaking, ending with a visit to Roman's workshop where we engage in an in-depth discussion of openmovement's OM10 watch movement.

The OM10 movement was designed with a team of watchmakers led by Roman. The design process involved designing the movement in Autodesk Inventor and prototyping the parts of the movement in acrylic, steel, brass, and oversized 3D prints to test and iterate the design. The team then made twenty working, cased prototypes. The next stage of the process is to make between one hundred and two hundred "ébauches" (unfinished movement parts kits).

Roman studied watchmaking in Zurich, Solothurn and Le Locle, worked in restoration at the workshops of Parmigiani Fleurier and the International Museum of Horology in La Chaux-de-Fonds, and has been an independent watchmaker since 2007.

Openmovement is a Swiss non-profit formed in La Chaux-de-Fonds to make open source watch movements.

For more information about the openmovement.org fundraiser and the OM10 movement project see my recent video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOeRpQ2SHLU

There's also an excellent TedX talk (in French) by Roman here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyGoKtNBrRI&t (if you don't speak French you can of course turn on English, or other langauge, subtitles)
