Sunday Morning Preaching on Sin: Envy

The Poison of Envy and the Power of Contentment
July 13 2025

Opening Scripture:
-- "A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones."
-- - Proverbs 14:30 (KJV)
Introduction: What Is Envy?
Envy is not just wanting what someone else has-it's resenting them for having it. It's a silent killer of joy, a thief of peace, and a destroyer of relationships. The Bible warns us repeatedly about envy because it corrodes the soul and distances us from God's will.
---
I. The Nature of Envy
-- "Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?"
-- - Proverbs 27:4 (KJV)
- Envy is more dangerous than anger or wrath.
- It hides behind smiles and polite words, but it burns within.
- It leads to bitterness, gossip, and division.
Example: Cain envied Abel's favor with God and committed the first murder (Genesis 4:5-8).
---
II. Envy Separates Us from God
-- "For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work."
-- - James 3:16 (KJV)
- Envy opens the door to chaos and sin.
- It blinds us to our own blessings.
- It makes us question God's goodness and fairness.
Example: The Pharisees envied Jesus' influence and plotted His death (Matthew 27:18).

---

III. Envy Destroys Relationships
-- "Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another."
-- - Galatians 5:26 (KJV)
- Envy breeds competition instead of compassion.
- It poisons friendships, families, and churches.
- It turns unity into rivalry.
Example: Joseph's brothers envied him and sold him into slavery (Genesis 37:11, 28).
---
IV. The Cure for Envy: Contentment and Love
-- "But godliness with contentment is great gain."
-- - 1 Timothy 6:6 (KJV)
-- "Charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up."
-- - 1 Corinthians 13:4 (KJV)
- Contentment comes from trusting God's plan for your life.
- Love rejoices in others' blessings rather than resenting them.
- Gratitude is the antidote to envy.
---
V. Living Free from Envy
-- "Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."
-- - Hebrews 13:5 (KJV)
- Focus on what God has given you.
- Celebrate others without comparison.
- Remember: God's presence is your greatest treasure.
---
Conclusion: A Heart Check

Envy is subtle, but deadly. It can creep into our hearts unnoticed. Today, let us ask God to cleanse us from envy and fill us with love, gratitude, and peace.
-- "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me."
-- - Psalm 51:10 (KJV)
