They said the keys were good🔑… but are they? Checking the locks🔒 before move-in🚪

Another day, another surprise in the world of property management. The last residents assured me the locks and keys were “good to go.” But when I tested them during my pre-move-in inspection, the keys didn’t even work.

With the tenant’s move-in date right around the corner, this is a deal-breaker. Tenants must have full, working access to the property in order for it to be habitable under North Carolina law. No excuses.

So, here’s what I had to do today:

🏬 Stop by the local home improvement store to pick up a new set of knobs and deadbolts

🔧 Go back to the property and change out the locks myself

✅ Test the new keys to confirm everything works smoothly

🔑 Leave the property fully secured and tenant-ready

It protects the homeowner by ensuring the property is secured properly

It ensures compliance with habitability requirements — tenants must have unrestricted access to their home

It builds tenant trust right from day one (no one wants to move into a place where the keys don’t even work!)
