Strong legs are key to longevity because leg strength is directly linked to better health, a longer lifespan, and a higher quality of life as you age. This is because maintaining strong legs helps improve cardiovascular health, functional capacity for daily tasks, balance, brain health, and reduces the risk of premature death.
How can we strengthen our legs to improve longevity? Regular exercise: Incorporate leg-strengthening exercises into our daily routine.
Walking: This is one of the simplest and most complete exercises for strengthening our legs and improving cardiovascular health.
Squats: These are a fundamental exercise for strengthening our quadriceps. In a study of older adults, those with weaker quadriceps had a 51% to 65% higher risk of premature death, even after adjusting for age, race, body size, physical activity, and inflammation.
