Days Gone | Deacon may need some driving lessons but at least he can loot and stealth kill
Gameplay Part 1
Days Gone is an open-world action-adventure survival horror game set in a harsh wilderness two years after a devastating global pandemic. Developed by Bend Studio.
A global pandemic occurred which decimated the globe, turning millions of humans into feral cannibalistic creatures, called Freakers. The remnants of humanity have abandoned towns to seek refuge in the wilderness creating safe zones.
Set in a post-apocalyptic Oregon two years after the global pandemic, Days Gone follows the story of Deacon St. John, a former outlaw of a biker gang. After discovering that there is a chance his wife Sarah is still alive, Deacon, now a bounty hunter, embarks on a quest to reunite with her.
In this playthrough we cover:
He Can’t Be Far: Deacon and Boozer pick up the trail of wanted drifter Leon, learning he betrayed and killed Alvarez, then hop on their bikes for a high-speed chase through the Cascade Wilderness; Deacon weaves through obstacles, avoids incendiary traps, and uses bike boosts to stay on Leon’s tail as he throws Molotovs ahead. The mission climaxes when Leon wrecks his bike and tries to shoot them, forcing Deacon and Boozer to take cover.
We’ll Make It Quick: After Leon abandons his bike, Deacon and Boozer pursue him on foot via narrow forest trails, using Survival Vision to track his footprints and clues through the woods. The chase ends at a small campsite where an injured Leon bargains with Deacon, offering a stash map before being killed, and Deacon must craft a bandage and return to the bikes—only to discover his fuel pump is shot.
I Say We Head North: With Deacon’s bike broken, Boozer takes the lead as Deacon rides shotgun toward Crazy Willie’s for parts, talking about heading north to escape it all. Along the way they encounter a roadblock and ambush by Marauders, pushing a Humvee aside and fighting off attackers before hopping back on.
Bad Way to Go Out: Deacon must lead the way on foot through the infested Belknap Tunnel, clearing a Freaker nest that blocks their progress before mounting up again with Boozer. This moment reinforces Deacon’s haunted mindset of leaving the past behind as they prepare for bigger threats ahead.
You Got a Death Wish: Searching Crazy Willie’s Garage for a fuel pump turns deadly when Deacon discovers Boozer has been ambushed by the Rippers cult and badly burned; Deacon fights through cultists to rescue his friend and secure the pump. This is one of the first real confrontations with the Rippers’ twisted ideology, cementing their threat and Boozer’s fragile condition.
Drifters on the Mountain: After Boozer’s rescue, Deacon navigates Marauder territory on foot to reconnect with his bike, skirmishes with hostile scavengers, and then escorts Copeland’s man Manny back to safety. This mission ties into the burgeoning Gear Up For The Ride arc, punctuating the game’s shift toward faction conflicts and moral ambiguity.
Bugged the Hell Out: Deacon rides out to a NERO checkpoint to restore power to a Mobile Medical Unit to find supplies for Boozer, rebooting generators and scavenging sterile bandages. This small detective-like mission hooks into the larger NERO storyline, foreshadowing the larger mystery of the outbreak and technology that drives much of the mid-game.
No Starving Patriots: Riding out to a radio tower ambush camp, Deacon clears out hostile humans to reactivate the tower’s power; flipping the switch and investigating the bunker uncovers more clues and cements his role in stabilizing survivor networks. This mission introduces tougher enemy camps and the idea that not all threats are Freakers, desperate humans.
Sounded Like Engines: Deacon climbs a radio tower to scout out enemy activity, triggering dialogue and revealing the next marauder camp or threat in the area.
Smoke on the Mountain: Deacon targets a Marauder camp spotted by that tower, stalking through traps, tripping wires, and using stealth tactics or open combat to eliminate all hostiles. Clearing this out disrupts marauder activities and rewards big XP and trust.
Out of Nowhere: Following a black helicopter sighting, Deacon rides to Pioneer Cemetery to locate Leon’s hidden drug stash using markers and survival-tracking; upon finding and tying it to his bike, he pursues the chopper’s trail toward something bigger.
They’re Not Sleeping: Deacon scouts the helicopter landing area silently, eavesdropping without being detected, to gather intel on the mysterious researchers and their heavily guarded mission objective, establishing new plot threads into government remnants and NERO activity.
