I take down the sixth EMMI, but then seem to be trapped for a bit. I manage to find my way out and take down that 'uge X that drops the Cross Bomb, and with it, I finally figure out how to those tanks that would require me to make it across a bunch of Pitfall Blocks while using the Morph Ball.
