Backpacking the Epic Holy Cross Wilderness (4K) - Pt 3

The Holy Cross Wilderness in Colorado is one of the most epic places to hike or backpack in the United States. It is located around the Mount of the Holy Cross, one of Colorado's 14ers, & less than an hour west of Denver, CO. It has a reputation as the Bermuda Triangle of Colorado for all the stories of people that vanish in the wilderness.

The wilderness is characterized by rugged ridgelines and glacier-carved valleys, spruce-fir forests, cascading streams, and dozens of lakes; elevations range from 8,500 feet to 14,005 feet. The wilderness is named after Mount of the Holy Cross, which became famous in 1873 when William Henry Jackson first photographed the cross of snow on the northeast face of the mountain. Over 150 miles of trail traverse the area, providing excellent opportunities for day hiking and backpacking trips.

In this Episode, we woke up at camp at Hunky Dory Lake to below freezing temperatures and howling winds. We had storms all night but it all came in the form of rain. We packed up and headed out to visit the old abandoned mining town of Holy Cross City and explore the artifacts. From there we headed over towards Fancy lake and then started the monster climb to Fancy Pass. We made it over the scree field and down the other side and connected with the Cross Creek Trail. We hiked down the valley to epic views everywhere. It was a spectacular day.
