S1E111 He Save 1000 Apple Varieties
This week I ran across an article entitled: Meet the Appalachian Apple Hunter Who Rescued 1,000 ‘Lost’ Varieties
It is the story of a retired chemical engineer named Tom Brown who since 2001 has been searching for and "rescuing" apple varieties from the Appalachians. He actually stumbled across this "hobby" by visiting a farmer's marked in 1998 where he found a little stand filled with what he refers to as "strange looking apples." And through this "hobby", he has been able to save over 1,000 apple varieties that may have been lost forever.
As I read the article and then had subsequent conversations with people, it got me to thinking that while most of us will never save 1,000 apple varieties, as homesteaders we can do something It may be helping to save a particular breed of animal, or cultivating a variety of vegetable year after year passing the seeds on to subsequent generation, or passing on a skill; but all of us can do something.
Enjoy!!
